When it comes to eye diseases that are common in the middle-aged and elderly population, cataracts are the first thing that comes to mind. In fact, there is another eye disease that is very common among middle-aged and elderly people - macular degeneration (or age-related macular degeneration, AMD). Macular degeneration is one of the top three blinding eye diseases in the world, which can seriously affect the patient's vision and in the worst case it can lead directly to blindness. What is macular degeneration and how can it be prevented?

What is macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a disease that affects the macula, a special structure in the retina. The macula helps us see shapes, colors, etc. When the macula is diseased, vision loss, distorted vision, and abnormal color vision occur. When you first develop macular degeneration, the changes are not obvious. Many people think they have cataracts when they actually have macular degeneration. There is no special treatment for this disease, so it's important to prevent it.

How can we prevent macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration can be caused by a number of factors, including age, smoking, being overweight, having heart disease and high blood pressure, prolonged exposure to sunlight, and so on.

Regular preventive eye exams, quitting smoking, eating foods rich in Omega-3 fatty acids and more dark green leafy vegetables, and wearing sunglasses with UV protection are all considered possible ways to prevent or delay the onset of AMD.

The macula is the most sensitive area of visual function and is particularly susceptible to the stimulation of bright light. Eyecedar sunglasses are designed to effectively reduce UV rays from entering the eyes and to reduce the damage caused by bright light. Additionally, prescription glasses and reading glasses can be combined with sunglasses to create customised prescription sunglasses or sun reading glasses.

It's never too early to start caring for our eyes to keep macular degeneration away! Wish you have a good vision!
